Various techniques are used to recreate the appearance of fish scales in the surface treatment of fishing lures. These include painting, plating, aluminum foil, and silver foil, which give them a natural shine, and holographic sheets are used to enhance their fish-attracting effect. However, conventional holograms lacked the realism of real fish scales because the same lens pattern was repeated.
Sketching the scales of live fish and combining over a hundred patterns.
Shimano's "Scale Boost" lures utilize a composite pitch hologram, an evolution of virtual hologram technology based on the scales of live fish. While typical lens holograms use a single circular pattern, "Scale Boost" combines hundreds of scale patterns with different designs, sizes, brightness, angles, and ways of reflecting light. This reflection is incredibly realistic, and the natural flashing light that spreads in all directions attracts even wary fish.
Use the five variations depending on the lure.
"Scale Boost" uses five different reflective patterns, chosen to suit the lure: N (Natural), A (Appeal), T (Transparent), S (Small), and ST (Small Transparent). "N" replicates the scales of a real fish, pursuing realism with each scale shining independently. "A" enhances presence by enlarging the scales, balancing realism with strong appeal. "T" uses a transparent film, allowing scales to dynamically shimmer or disappear depending on the angle of light. "S" reduces scale size to create a seductive sense of life and sparkle, while "ST" combines transparency with fine small scales for a mysterious, subtle shimmer.
The scale-like "N" hologram, designed to be so realistic it drives you crazy.
The design of the "N" hologram began with the pursuit of true realism, starting with sketching the scales of a live sardine. Scales were collected from an actual sardine, enlarged, and digitized to layout the exact spacing found in nature. When immersed in water, it shines dynamically as if the baitfish were truly alive.
Intensely stimulating scales "A" hologram
To deliver an even stronger flash alongside natural realism, Shimano adjusted the scale sizes to match juvenile gizzard shad, mullet, and crucian carp. Meticulous processing ensures each individual scale reflects powerfully, maximizing the high-appeal flashing capacity and offering an unprecedented fishing experience under tough conditions.
The "T" hologram imbues the transparent lure with a lifelike appearance.
Ideal for clear water or wary fish, the "T" variation uses transparent film. Depending on the angle of incoming light, scales intermittently flash or disappear entirely. When paired over a Flash Boost system, the combination creates a highly organic, hyper-realistic shimmer that mirrors a live fish subtly moving its fins and gills.
The "S" hologram combines realism and appeal.
Focusing on the fine scales of cherry salmon and bitterling, the "S" hologram avoids simply scaling down standard patterns. Instead, advanced engineering scatters micro-scale arrangements across the lure. This intensifies the spark of each individual micro-scale, generating exceptional visual output that triggers target instincts even on smaller plug varieties.
