By Max Dispoto

Bridging the gap between the Stella SW 20000PG and 30000PG, Shimano introduced the Stella SW 25000PG for 2026. This new size combines the best attributes of both platforms and may very well be the most capable Stella ever built for targeting giant tuna.

Designed with serious bluefin anglers in mind, the Stella SW 25000PG delivers an impressive 66 lbs of max drag and holds 440 yards of 100 lb PowerPro braid. With 43 inches of line retrieved per crank, it provides the perfect balance of power and speed—whether you’re casting or jigging for giants.

The entire Stella SW D Series in sizes 18000–25000 also receives several upgrades over the previous generation. At the forefront is the enhanced XX Tough Drag, now stronger and more durable than ever. An additional drag washer has been added to the top of the spool, reducing heat buildup during long, high-pressure runs. Less heat means smoother drag performance and reduced strength loss when it matters most.

Another major advancement is INFINITYLOOP, Shimano’s new, variable-speed line oscillation system. The spool oscillation is slower on the way down and is sped up on the way up. This greatly improves line management and increases casting distance—an essential advantage when chasing large, wary fish.

Ocea Plugger Big Game Series

The Ocea Plugger Big Game series has earned its reputation as the ultimate spinning rod for big bluefin. These rods excel at lifting heavy fish during extended fights while minimizing angler fatigue—something few rod series have ever truly mastered.

Originally offered in three models (710XH, 73XXH, and 70XXXH), each has proven its value depending on fishing style and target size of tuna. For 2026, Shimano raises the bar even further. Not only are two new models being introduced, but the original three also receive significant updates.

The A-Series upgrades focus on two key improvements:

  1. Longer front grip – This provides a more effective fighting position, especially when fishing from a belt with the rod held vertically. The added leverage allows anglers to hold the rod higher and fight with more control and power.

  2. Shimano X-Guide – Shimano’s proprietary guide system is now significantly larger in diameter, specifically designed to better match the size of large Stella spools. The result is smoother line flow and improved overall rod performance.

The two new models include a 7’2” XXXH Glass rod and a 3-piece 8’3” XH, giving anglers even more options to dial in their setup based on fishing style, personal fighting technique, and target fish size.

A Perfect System

The Stella SW and Ocea Plugger Big Game series have each redefined what’s possible with spinning tackle, but together they operate as a complete system built specifically for giant bluefin. This pairing eliminates the traditional limitations of spinning gear by combining extreme drag power and durability with rods engineered to efficiently transfer that power into the fish.

The result is shorter fight times and far less angler fatigue. The Stella’s consistent, high-pressure drag works seamlessly with the Ocea Plugger’s lifting power, allowing anglers to maintain control throughout the fight without being overmatched. This balance is critical when targeting giant bluefin, where efficiency and endurance are the keys to success.

The emphasis on landing fish quicker and easier cannot be overstated. What was once a rare achievement—landing big bluefin on spinning gear—has become increasingly common. With this setup, anglers are now able to confidently land multiple large fish in a single day while maintaining control and reducing physical strain.

A simple way to understand this pairing is to think of a race car: peak performance only happens when every component is designed to work together. The Stella SW and Ocea Plugger Big Game complement each other in the same way, unlocking performance neither could achieve alone and setting a new standard for modern big-game spinning gear.
